LOCKERBIE AFTER-SCHOOL LEARNING

Students need after-school learning, known as ‘extra lessons’, for many reasons. Missing information at school through sickness or teacher absence is only one. However, observations over 15 years indicate that the common denominators are that classes in schools are too large, syllabi are expanding, there is no time to teach learning & test-taking skills, technology has not yet become an effective learning tool and the multiple-intelligences of students are not being differentiated for.

Small class sizes! Studies indicate that student achievement is clearly linked to class size and when a student must enroll in after-school lessons the main objective must be that the student receives concentrated, individualised attention;
We incorporate study skills and strategies which significantly help to reduce time spent studying hard and the anxiety that accompanies it;
Our tutors understand how their students learn best and differentiate their presentation, customizing their approach for each student so that there is clarity, collaboration, self-discovery and fun;
Access to our online course management system which includes notes, media clips, images, detailed explanations, mind maps, flow charts, and learning keys are powerful learning and study tools;
Email access to tutors after-hours;
Access to labs makes a great deal of difference in an after-school lesson as almost all students are kinesthetic learners and repeating a lab with targeting what was not understood initially is the secret to clarifying poor understanding;
And always – teachers with whom students can connect on a social level; teachers who encourage questioning, love to analyse mistakes, provide timely feedback and for whom teaching is their passion.

Lockerbie College actually began as an extra-lessons centre in 2005, where students came after school to meet friends, bask in air conditioned classrooms and shrug off the day’s frustrations.
