LEARNING JOURNEYS

At Lockerbie College we design individual learning journeys. What is your child interested in? What are his or her strengths?  Does your child need to discover his or her purpose in the world and the contribution that will be uniquely  theirs? This is what we can provide:

FIELD TRIPS

On our Field Trips more than one subject is involved. There are multiple objectives and students are placed in collaborative teams across year levels. Unlike the field trips parents may remember, there is little stopping and staring. Our students leave with tasks, clipboards, tools, resources, and activities planned from the journey there to the journey back. Primary students are exposed to advanced thinking and are supported by older students as they carry out lab work on site. Secondary students learn to connect knowledge, and experience learning, beyond the subjects they have selected to study. Our whole-school field trips are designed to integrate project-based collaboration in the real world.

PRIMARY

Students in our Junior School, aged between 8 and 11, follow the Barbados National Curriculum, matrixed with the International Primary Curriculum and the Cambridge International Primary Curriculum. Barbadian Nationals are prepared for the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (BSSEE), or 11+. Our bespoke matrix ensures our students learn in a broader and more balanced way through subjects which are all connected by a common theme. This ensures knowledge is inherently connected and students acquire a global perspective, closer to that of British and North American students.

SECONDARY

Students in our Senior School follow the Barbados National Curriculum, completing the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) at the end of their Form 2 year. In Form 3, students enjoy a ‘taster year’ where they experience broad learning across 15 subjects, from which they choose between 5 to 8 to study at CSEC. In Forms 4 and 5, students select the subjects of relevance to where they think their future lies. At Lockerbie College, because we see young people as ‘multipotentialites’ with a diverse range of interests, which we believe they should be encouraged to pursue, we allow ‘open’ subject choices.  Students select subjects of interest, instead of choosing predetermined ‘bands’.

CAMBRIDGE

Referred to as, the ‘gold standard’ qualification, “thousands of learners worldwide gain places at leading universities every year with Cambridge International AS & A Levels. The syllabuses develop a deep understanding of subjects and independent thinking skills. Cambridge programmes and qualifications set the global standard for international education. They are created by subject experts, rooted in academic rigour and reflect the latest educational research. Schools can shape the curriculum around how they want students to learn. Every year, nearly a million Cambridge learners prepare for their future with an education from Cambridge International. Cambridge learners are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged – equipped for success in the modern world.”

THE SCHOOL - PARENT - STUDENT TEAM

Our Agreement of Understanding between Lockerbie College, Parents, and Students lays out our expectations of Admissions when a student joins the school.

We seek to impact change in our students on a holistic level, through providing a structure to support them academically, emotionally, psychologically, and behaviourally. Our aim is to inspire independent thinkers, passionate achievers, and global citizens who are committed to improving their personal performance while striving for excellence. We believe that young people should understand the significance of making a meaningful contribution to society.

We are dedicated to growing leaders worth following and for this, all parties have a valuable and vitally important role to play in growing children up to be the best of themselves.
